Sit At His Feet: Choose What is Better - Day Three, Daily Devotional for Lent

Day Three - February 21, 2015

I do not know most of you reading this devotional today. I do not know your backgrounds, your testimony or what is happening in your life right now. I do not know how many of you are walking around dragging chains of bondage that you have been unable to break free of. However, I do know the One and only One who can remove those chains. Jesus.

In Luke 8 we read about an encounter Jesus had with a demon possessed man. This man lived in a cemetery, naked and homeless. He wandered about day after day. Jesus had intentionally set His course to this Gentile area. He deliberately left the Jewish people he had been teaching to go to this Gentile land. After calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee (some scholars argue that it was the demons who caused this storm to try and block Jesus from entering this Gentile land), Jesus’ boat arrived in the region of Gerasemes (v. 26). Geographically, we do not know exactly where this demon possessed man lived “in the cemetery outside of the town” (v. 27), but we do know that wherever it was, this demon possessed man had to travel some distance to meet Jesus as he climbed out of the boat. These demons were looking for a showdown. They were questioning Jesus as to why He was there. The New Living Translation says, “As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed, ‘Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?’" (v. 28). This was a Gentile, unclean land according to Jewish tradition. We know this because of the pigs later referenced in verses 32-33. Jesus went on to have a conversation with this demon. Who has conversations with demons other than the One who knows them? If I could draw cartoons, I would draw Jesus standing with this poor man, with thousands of little demons shaking in their boots. Why? Because this demon had to reference himself as “Legion.” Here was one man, Jesus, who had all authority in earth and heaven and these demons knew it. They bowed at His feet when He arrived and they knew His name. One demon could not take out Jesus so it had to be multiple demons showing up to fight against Jesus. The word “Legion” creates a word picture of the thousands – about six thousand – soldiers in a Roman legion.
